In most cases, no additional scans or blood tests are needed before IG-SRT aside from the biopsy you likely already had to diagnose the skin cancer. The crucial piece of information is the pathology report confirming the type of skin cancer, which your dermatologist will review prior to treatment. Unlike some other cancer treatments, we don’t typically need CT or MRI imaging because the ultrasound built into the IG-SRT machine will visualize the tumor at the time of treatment. You also generally don’t need lab tests. As long as we have the biopsy confirming a basal or squamous cell carcinoma and the area is suitable, we can proceed with planning IG-SRT. Of course, the doctor will do a physical exam of the area and ask about your medical history, but there’s no special scanning procedure required beforehand – the machine’s ultrasound handles the imaging of the tumor in real-time during your treatment sessions.
