Category: IG-SRT

We have several strategies to manage and minimize side effects during IG-SRT. First, your doctor may recommend or prescribe a topical steroid cream to apply to the treatment area if the skin becomes very red or inflamed – this can reduce inflammation and itching. Often, we advise keeping the skin well moisturized with a gentle ointment or moisturizer (like Aquaphor) throughout the treatment course to combat dryness and peeling. If the skin cracks or shows any sign of secondary infection (which is rare), a topical antibiotic ointment can be used to promote healing and prevent infection. For areas like inside the nose that get dry, using a saline nasal spray or a dab of petroleum jelly inside the nostrils can alleviate dryness and stop minor nosebleeds. We also tailor the treatment if needed: IG-SRT is delivered in stages, so the doctor is regularly assessing your skin – if the reaction is more intense than expected, they might pause treatment for a few days, adjust the dose, or give you a break to let the skin recuperate. The vast majority of skin reactions heal up 2 to 6 weeks after treatment ends, and during that period we continue the above care (creams, gentle cleansing, avoidance of irritants). Over-the-counter pain relievers are usually not necessary since pain is minimal, but if you have discomfort, something like ibuprofen can help with inflammation. In summary: gentle skin care, prescribed creams, and close monitoring are the keys. By following your dermatologist’s instructions – like applying the creams as directed and avoiding sun on the area – you’ll help the side effects resolve as quickly as possible. And remember, our team is here to support you; if you have any troublesome symptoms, we want to know and will intervene to keep you comfortable.
