IG-SRT works by delivering a calibrated dose of X-ray energy to the cancerous tissue, which damages the DNA of the skin cancer cells and causes those cells to die off. Over a series of treatment sessions, all the malignant cells are destroyed. The body’s natural healing process then kicks in – the dead cancer cells are gradually cleared out and replaced by healthy new tissue over time. Because the radiation is superficial (only penetrating a few millimeters into the skin), it concentrates the effect on the tumor while sparing deeper structures. In short, IG-SRT targets the tumor with radiation, the cancer cells can’t repair themselves and die, and the surrounding normal skin then grows in to heal the area. This results in elimination of the tumor usually without any significant scar formation.
