Yes, it’s an excellent option for patients who cannot undergo surgery. In fact, IG-SRT was partly developed to serve those who are not surgical candidates. If you have medical conditions that make surgery risky (for example, severe heart disease, bleeding disorders, need for anticoagulants, etc.), IG-SRT allows you to still effectively treat your skin cancer without facing those surgical risks. Also, some patients might not tolerate anesthesia or have allergies to anesthetic meds – IG-SRT requires none. We’ve treated many patients who, due to advanced age or health issues, were not comfortable with surgery or their primary care doctor advised against surgery – and IG-SRT provided a safe cure for their skin cancer. Moreover, if you have an area that’s been operated on before and more surgery would be difficult (like a recurrence where surgery would cause significant disfigurement or functional issues), IG-SRT can step in. Essentially, IG-SRT offers a life-saving (or at least tissue-saving) alternative for those who can’t have surgery. It can be done while you continue other necessary medications (like blood thinners) and without putting you through an operative procedure. It’s also worth noting that some people “cannot” have surgery not for physical reasons but personal ones – severe anxiety or phobia of surgery. IG-SRT is a boon for them as well, eliminating the need for the knife. In summary, if surgery is off the table for any reason, IG-SRT is likely the next best thing and has comparable cure rates, making it a highly suitable option.
