Generally, no, you won’t feel a thing as the radiation is being delivered. The experience is akin to getting a dental X-ray or an ordinary skin X-ray – it’s invisible and sensation-free. You won’t see or feel the radiation beams. The machine might make a faint buzzing or humming sound when it’s on, but you physically won’t sense the rays. There’s no heat, no vibration, no electric shock or anything like that. Some patients, as an analogy, recall how you don’t feel anything during a chest X-ray or CT scan – it’s similar for this superficial X-ray treatment. On occasion, a patient might report feeling a slight warmth or tingling in the area, but this is uncommon and if it happens, it’s very mild. So, as the radiation is administered, you’ll likely be thinking, “Is it even doing anything?” – which is a good sign because it means it’s not causing discomfort. It’s only later, as cells respond, that you might feel some of the side-effect sensations (like skin tenderness), but during the treatment itself there is no obvious feeling.
