IG-SRT is delivered using a specialized machine that combines a superficial X-ray radiotherapy unit with an ultrasound imaging system. One example is the Sensus SRT-100 Vision machine (which we use), a state-of-the-art device that “sees before it treats.” The machine has an ultrasound probe (often a small wand) that the therapist places on the skin to get real-time images of the tumor. It also has an X-ray treatment head – essentially an arm that can be positioned over the lesion – which emits low-energy X-rays targeted to the area marked out from the ultrasound. The X-rays used are similar in energy level to the X-rays used in dental offices (superficial radiation), not the high-energy beams used for internal cancers. The machine is typically housed in the dermatology office; it looks like a compact unit with an articulating arm and an ultrasound screen attached. All of this technology works together to ensure the radiation dose is delivered only where needed, guided by the imaging.
